Where it all began

We are brimming with ideas for recipes and have had so many adventures we want to share with you guys that we hardly know where to start…
So why not start at the beginning and go from there?

Our first ever adventure together! The biketrip in Denmark where we had our first genius outdoor cooking experience. And where we became friends…

Since the trip was 3 years ago, our memory is a bit hazy on the details. Actually no one from our biking group remembers who actually came up with the idea!
But I loved how everyone had totally different distinctive memory …

The trip took us around the northern Part of Zealand: Starting in Copenhagen, we biked to Roskilde, where we visited a viking festival and had huge portions of ice cream.

The first night we spent somewhere close to Lyndby right at the fjord. Day 2 of our journey we biked north along the Roskilde fjord, which we then crossed with what can only be described as the world’s smallest ferry.  Then we went along the coast to Helsingør. There we visited the famous Castle Kronborg, which is known for being the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. And of course we couldn’t miss the “merman”, the male, modern counterpart to the statue of the little Mermaid in Copenhagen. Finally we followed the coast all the way back to Copenhagen.

Here we are: crossing Roskilde Fjord on the probably smallest ferry known to mankind

The best part were the sleeping spots we found. Thanks to Stepanka we had an amazing book which listed all shelters in the area. These shelters are mostly simple wooden structures with one open side. They are just high enough that you can comfortably lie down and accommodate around 5 or more people. Usually there is also a fire place and a table there. It is definitely the coziest way of camping.

Unfortunately our outdoor cooking had a bit of a rough start. We only had one gas cooking stove for all seven of us and it was not the most efficient one…
We tried pasta – which took forever to cook; we heated up ravioli from a can – which tasted awful. Finally we resorted to eating bread and canned mackerel, which was actually not that bad, but you know, not exactly a deluxe meal.

But one day was different. First of all we picked some blackberries and a mirabelles that were growing on the side of the road. We also came upon a farmer that sold some produce 24 hours from a hut and we got some potatoes.

After a long and frustrating search for our camping spot, we finally arrived at the shelter. It was a beautiful secluded spot in a forest by a small lake. Someone even left some coal for the fireplace! So we had a barbeque with some apparently really amazing sausages, which I (being a vegetarian) of course can’t remember…

We also found an ominous orange lying around that seemed to be fine, so we decided to make a porridge dessert with orange and the other fruit that we picked that day. It was the most amazing dessert ever! At least thats what it felt like after a long exhausting day of biking ….

All of us girls are obious fans of the “merman”

So unfortunately there’s no real recipe from this trip, since we just don’t remember enough details. But here are some take home messages we learned along the way that apply for every outdoor cooking adventure:

Be flexible. Don’t panic if things don’t go as planned. Just go with it and maybe you’ll have a different, but even more amazing adventure.

Use your surroundings. everything  from nature, like fruits and herbs or existing structures like barbeques, shelter and so on. This will make your adventure more comfortable, yummy and fun!

This way every adventure will become a unique experience.
And as always: just enjoy your moonlight cooking adventure!

Also take notes in case you ever want to write a story about …
